Case Study- The Iron Lady

British Film Case Study- The Iron Lady

Plot:

'The Iron Lady' a 2011 British biographical film, follows the life of the famous lady Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (and the longest serving Prime Minister of the 20th Century)- Margret Thatcher. The film starts with being set in the year of 2008, where an elderly version of Margret Thatcher is being portrayed. We see her continuous struggle with dementia, a prevalent theme throughout the film, that and the personal price that Thatcher has paid for power. During the film we flashback to her earlier youth, prior to her becoming Prime Minister, and follow her on her journey into entering the House of Commons (which was particularly difficult for women in that time period). Throughout the film they also flashback to the prominent historical events which occurred during her time as PM such as rising unemployment.

What makes this film British?

The Iron Lady was directed and produced by wholly British producers and directors (Phyllida Lloyd and Damian Jones) and some of the studio's, of which it was produced in, where wholly British too. These included: Pathe, Film4 Productions, UK Film Council and Goldcrest Films. Another reason which supports the idea of The Iron Lady being a British film is that it is based on British history, and was shot in Britain also.

Reception

The film received mixed reviews from certain film critics, with a critic from The Guardian stating that the "narrative trajectory" could overlook "rage about what Thatcher, economy destroyer and warmonger, was doing to Britain" in favour of an "exclusive focus on Thatcher as a woman triumphing against the odds." and many critics reviews on the film stated that "it is impossible not to be disturbed by her depiction of Lady Thatcher's decline into dementia". Overall, for The Iron Lady positive reviews were applauded to it, and it was positively well received by the public.
